Why Critique Groups are so Valuable

In the world of writing these days the editing process has become a lost art. You hear more and more about how publishers are no longer taking on work that requires editing, or having authors pay to have their work edited.
Also, the amount of self-published work has gone up tremendously. Where does a writer go to have his or her work cleaned up?
Well, if you’re working with a critique group you don’t have those issues. I’ve been blessed to have worked with two terrific groups of writers who met strictly to help their fellow writers and to accept criticism with grace. The people in my current group are understanding, smart and very good writers as well. They aren’t jealous or competitive. They are supportive and nurturing with their comments. You can’t put a price on how valuable it is to have writers of their ability to line edit your work on a routine basis. It’s something I’m very grateful for and wish every writer had the support I receive from the people within our group. The writing world would be a better place if everyone did.
