Make ’em Bleed

Unlike Eerie dwarf, I only read horror when it is a bright sunny day, and I’m surrounded by other dwarves in my swamp. But as a writer I have realize the importance of suspense and conflict in all genres. From emotional tension within a scene, to inner character turmoil, suspense and conflict make the mundane fascinating and keep those pages flying.

One book I highly recommend on this topic is Conflict and Suspense by James Scott Bell. It goes from the larger concepts such as conflict in your books theme, to the minuscule ideas such as using grammar to stretch tension. It has exercises for characters and editing which can help with your current manuscript. Mine is dog-eared and marked up as I have already gone back to it several times as I am editing my current novel.

I like to see my characters bleed whether physically or emotionally. And if you care enough about a character, people will want to see the outcome. It’s those stale moments that make me drop a book and sometimes fail to pick it up again. So to all those writers out there, keep the stakes high and make ‘em bleed.
