Writer’s block. Real or imagined?

When I get blocked my instinct is avoidance.  If I don’t sit down to write I can ignore the fact that I’m stuck.  The truth is when I’m stuck I have several different things I do to break out of a slump.

First: I’ll read the last 20 or 30 pages of my manuscript making minor changes as I go.  This puts me in the head of my characters or is it the other way around?  Yeah, I think when the character gets in my head I’m in the best place to go forward.

Next: I delete the last sentence of the document, and keep deleting until I find a place to pick up the pieces and start writing.

Last: I just force myself to write.  Even if it’s the worst drivel I’ve ever seen, because as I learned at a writers conference several years ago, “You can’t fix a blank page!”

The truth is (my opinion) that writers block has more to do with last weeks topic than anything else.  If you write in a disciplined manner, if you sit down at the same time everyday and write for a given length of time, it will come.  It won’t always be great.  But you ‘ll see words appear on the page and as I said earlier, you can fix anything once you’ve written it.  I think that point is worth repeating.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to take my own advice here and go write something.

Write On
